WSJ Weighs in on Immigrant Debate

Today, The Wall Street Journal takes on the myth that immigrants are coming here to go on the dole, check it out.

Oh Johnny Boy, will you learn?

John Edwards...First it's the $400 haircuts, now it's the $55,000 dollar fee for a speech....on POVERTY at University of California at Davis. The title of the speech was "Poverty, the Great Moral issue Facing America,". Ummm, is there really anything else left to say? I'd love to hear him justify this one in a debate.

Is media causing confusion over cancer?

A new study shows that 47% of Americans believe that just about everything causes cancer and many feel that nothing can be done to prevent cancer. In fact, a significant percentage of cancers are caused by smoking and obesity – risk factors that can be reduced with lifestyle changes.

One explanation for the confusion:
“There's also a tension between science and the media -- the former valuing the accumulation of solid evidence over time, and the latter trumpeting the results of perhaps only one particular study.”

That’s certainly a fair assessment. The media loves to lead with dire headlines warning us about the latest cause of cancer, but often they are citing a lone study showing a minor link which is refuted by many in the medical community.

John Stossel will be speaking tonight about myths purported by the media. I’m really looking forward to hearing what he has to say about the issue.

Funniest Commentary on the Debate Yet

Byron York is great for the National Review and today he had this funny line about McCain and Romney. For anyone who likes the WWE, enjoy...

If the McCain and Giuliani teams had plenty of reason to be happy, the third candidate in the top tier, Mitt Romney, did not. The former Massachusetts governor simply couldn’t match McCain and Giuliani on issues of war and terrorism, which are, as it happens, the most important issues to the Republican primary electorate in South Carolina. And when Romney went on the offensive Tuesday night, linking McCain to the arch-liberal Ted Kennedy, he found himself on the receiving end of a McCain smackdown.

Funniest thing I've read about the debate yet. By the end of the primaries, the commentary is going to be hilarious. Here's a link to the full article.

NY Post Hosts NYYRC Ladies at Debate Watch

Five members of the NYYRC were invited to participate in a Presidential Debate Watch and post-Debate discussion at the Offices of the NY Post last night. The Article is linked ABOVE (Click Title).

As leading ladies of the NYYRC, Board of Advisors Chair Sharlene Santercole, Events Chair Gail Allen, Public Relations Chair Jen Saunders, Speakers Chair Kerry Picket, and Active Member Zandra Williams gave honest reactions and candid responses, and for that I thank them.

Protectionism Rears Its Ugly Head in Congress

One of the most well-respected macro strategists on Wall Street, Morgan Stanley's Stephen Roach, recently testified in Congress on China trade.

His comment after leaving Capitol Hill: "the protectionist train has left the station."

He says China bashing could backfire and endanger the balance of the global economy.

Bottom line? "The U.S. Congress just doesn't do macro."

Thompson Page on Vote Smart

Project Vote Smart has posted a page on Fred Thompson. Ryan Sager sums up some of the more interesting points on the NY Sun blog.

Since Fred Thompson is being looked at by some social conservatives as their primary race savior, I find the 1994 stance on abortion that Sager points out very interesting. Romney has flip-flopped on the issue but seems to be struggling to sell himself to social conservatives, but maybe Thompson will have an easier time because he doesn’t have to get over the additional hurdle of being Morman.

NYC "skools" are just fine, right?

From Fox News:

Michael Levy, a health academy dean at Markham Intermediate School in Staten Island, N.Y., sent home a letter to around 100 eighth graders on Monday after a rowdy food fight in the cafeteria, the Staten Island Advance reported.

In the letter, Levy used "unexcecpable" for "unacceptable," "activates" for "activities" and "caferteria" for "cafeteria."

Tort Solution

There is an interesting solution for excessive product liability judgments in the Journal today – make products only subject to the product liability laws of the state they were purchased in, and charge a premium in states with product liability laws that favor the plaintiff. Consumers could choose whether the extra cost is worth the right to a frivolous lawsuit, and if enough consumers buy out of state, retailers will pressure the legislature to change the laws.

I’m not sure how feasible this is, but I like it.
